Perfect Contrition and Imperfect Contrition are two forms of sorrow for sin in the Catholic tradition, both important in seeking forgiveness.
Perfect Contrition

Perfect contrition is sorrow for sin that arises from a pure love of God. In this case, one feels deep regret for having offended God, not because of fear of punishment, but because of love for Him and the recognition of His goodness and mercy. Perfect contrition brings forgiveness of sins, even mortal sins, if it is accompanied by a firm intention to go to confession as soon as possible. It reflects a heart truly aligned with God’s will.
Imperfect Contrition
Imperfect contrition, also known as attrition, is sorrow for sin that arises out of fear of God’s punishment or fear of hell. While it lacks the perfect motive of love, it still involves a sincere regret for sin and a desire to avoid future offenses. Imperfect contrition, though not ideal, is sufficient for the forgiveness of sins in the Sacrament of Confession, when combined with sacramental absolution.
Both forms of contrition express a genuine desire for reconciliation, but perfect contrition is considered the higher, more complete expression of repentance because it stems from love rather than fear.
