Can a soul be saved from hell through prayers?
The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls faces judgement, and those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.” The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God. For it is God alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.
Like heaven, hell is an eternal state, so prayers cannot help the souls there. This is why apostle paul warns us;
Gal 6:7-9: “Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.”
